When Life Feels Heavy: Finding Strength in the Book of James

A hardship is upon me.

Those words feel heavy to type, but they are true. And today—thankfully—was therapy day.

Yes, I said it. And honestly, with all that’s going on in the world and in life, I’m sure many people who never thought they’d need therapy now find themselves sitting on that same couch or joining a zoom call. Whew. What a gift. She puts me in my place. Today, she was very clear that I can’t be the ‘fixer’. If I try, I am only in God’s way. Ugh. I have always been the fixer. I want to fix everything. Welp, I heard her loud and clear. So folks, I am no longer the fixer. 😀 She also made it clear there is a difference is a Peace Maker and a Peace Keeper. I can be a Peace Maker but it’s not my role to be the Peace Keeper. That’s not my circus. (she actually said that and that will forever stick with me because God knows my life is truly a circus 😉

Mine is incredible. A sweet soul with a Christian foundation. I love her. She is exactly what I need. Every. Single. Day.

Today, as I talked through the heaviness in my heart and the swirl of thoughts in my mind, she began to quote Scripture—specifically, the Book of James. (By the way, her knowledge of the Bible is amazing.) As she spoke, I knew that once our session ended, I needed to open my Bible.

So I did. And wow.

James may be short, but it is packed with everything my weary heart needed today.

A Book That Meets Us in Real Life

James doesn’t sugarcoat life. He meets us right in the middle of it—when it’s messy, confusing, and painful—and reminds us what a life of faith truly looks like.

Here’s what stood out to me:

  • Faith and Endurance – “When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” When trials come, we’re not being punished; we’re being shaped.
  • Listening and Doing – “You must be all be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires”. God’s Word isn’t just meant to be heard; it’s meant to be lived.
  • Prejudice – “There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. BUt if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.” We are all equal at the foot of the cross.
  • Faith Without Deeds – Real faith shows up in how we love, serve, and act.
  • Controlling the Tongue – “the tongue is a flame of fire”. Our words can heal or harm—sometimes faster than we realize.
  • True Wisdom – Not the world’s wisdom, but God’s gentle, peace-loving kind. Pray for it. I do every day.
  • Drawing Close to God – When we draw near to Him, He draws near to us.
  • Judging Others – A reminder that God alone is Judge.
  • Self-Confidence vs. God-Confidence – “boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil”.
  • Warning to the Rich – “The corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment.”
  • Patience and Endurance – Be patient . “We give great honor to those who endure under suffering”.
  • The Power of Prayer – Perhaps the most beautiful thread of all. I even asked her if I can’t fix, what do I do? She said PRAY.

Every page felt like a direct response to my prayers, my tears, and my questions.

When Everything Ties Together

After reading James, I opened The Bible Recap and read Tara Leigh Cobble’s overview. Then I turned to my Woman’s Study Bible. Then, I used my phone to learn from the Blue Letter Bible. It takes me several ways to truly understand.

All of it tied together.
All of it made sense.
All of it felt like God gently whispering, “I see you. I’m with you.”

A Gentle Reminder for Us All

If you are walking through something heavy today—if your heart feels tired, your faith feels shaky, or your spirit feels worn—open the Book of James.

Let it remind you that:

  • God is near.
  • Your faith matters.
  • Your prayers are powerful.
  • And endurance is being built, even when you can’t see it yet.

Sometimes healing begins with a single step…
and sometimes that step is simply opening your Bible.

Here’s a prayer for you –

Lord,
You see the weight we carry—the worries we don’t speak and the tears we try to hide.
Thank You for meeting us in Your Word when we feel weak and overwhelmed.

Help us to endure with faith,
to listen and obey,
to speak with kindness,
and to draw closer to You each day.

When our hearts feel heavy, remind us that You are near.
When we feel lost, anchor us in Your truth.
And when we feel tired, fill us with Your strength and peace.

Teach us to trust You in every season
and to always find joy—
not in our circumstances,
but in You.

Amen.

Here’s some scriptures that stood out to me –

“Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
— James 1:2–3

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
— James 4:8

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
— James 5:16

Here’s the translation from The Tony Evans Bible Commentary of James 1:5 (below). What should you do when trouble begins? Pray. Ask God for wisdom, which is the ability to apply spiritual truth to life’s circumstances.s He promises to give you wisdom to respond to your trials with maximum spiritual benefit. 🤔

The why behind “Lord, I am here!

Every day, it’s clear to me the ‘why’ behind this blog. This has become such a gift to me.
It’s my safe place to process, to reflect, and to share what God is teaching me—one step at a time. Writing allows me to breathe, to be honest, and to remember that even in hard seasons, God is still working. It truly brings me Joy!

This space is part of my journey with Him.
A place where I can lay my thoughts at His feet,
and still—always—find joy.

Even when life feels heavy,
even when the road is uncertain,
I choose joy…
because I know who walks beside me.

Thanks for stopping by. Blessings to you! –Bev
