More Than a Birthday… A Family God Gave Me
“A friend loves at all times…” – Proverbs 17:17
I have celebrated 64 birthdays.
There have been birthday parties, family dinners, cakes, cards, phone calls, and hugs. Every one of them was special because they were shared with the people who have loved me from the very beginning.
But this year…
This year was different.
This year, my church family surprised me with a birthday celebration, and somewhere in the middle of the laughter, the fellowship, and the joy, a thought quietly settled into my heart.
Not once in all 64 years had friends ever celebrated my birthday like this.
It had always been family.
Until now.
And that’s when it hit me…
They are family.
As I looked around the room at these incredible women, I realized God has blessed me with sisters in Christ who have become so much more than friends. They have become the family He lovingly placed in my life.
There were thoughtful gifts, heartfelt conversations, endless laughter, text messages, and even phone calls with friends singing “Happy Birthday” just for me. Every single moment reminded me that I am seen, loved, and cared for.
The gifts themselves were beautiful, but each one carried an even deeper meaning.
A prayer plant that will remind me daily to stay rooted in prayer.
Jewelry that reflects our shared faith in Christ.
A Blessing Bracelet—a reminder that God continues to pour blessings into my life, even when I least expect them.
A friendship bracelet with waves, symbolizing a friendship that grows through both the calm waters and the storms of life.
And an elephant—a beautiful reminder that some bonds are never broken.
Each gift told a story. Not about things… But about relationships. About faith.
About women who choose to walk beside one another through celebrations, hardships, victories, tears, and ordinary Tuesdays. Even this one – so special and so me, ha!

My youngest son and his girlfriend were also here on vacation, so they were included in the celebration. I loved that they were able to witness what genuine Christian fellowship looks like. It’s one thing to tell someone about your church family. It’s another for them to experience it firsthand.
And then…because every great celebration deserves dessert…There was a delicious Smith Island Cake waiting for us. If you’ve ever had one, you know exactly why everyone was smiling!
As I reflected later that evening, I couldn’t stop thanking God.
For years I prayed for deeper friendships.
For women who would encourage me in my faith.
For people who would celebrate life’s joys and walk beside me during life’s valleys.
I didn’t realize that God wasn’t simply answering my prayer by giving me friends.
He was giving me family.

The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”
That isn’t just about marriage. It’s about community. It’s about having people who pray for you before you even ask. People who celebrate your victories as if they were their own. People who check on you. Encourage you. Laugh with you. Cry with you.
And remind you, over and over again, that you never walk alone.
I know how incredibly blessed I am.
These ladies are there day and night. Literally.
They pray. They encourage. They challenge. They celebrate. They simply show up.
What an incredible gift that is.
As I begin my 65th year of life, I don’t find myself thinking about getting older.
I’m thinking about getting richer…Not in possessions. But in relationships.
And for that, I am forever grateful.
A Little Reflection
Have you thanked the people God has placed in your life lately?
Maybe it’s a lifelong friend. Maybe it’s someone from church. Maybe it’s a neighbor who always checks in.
Or perhaps someone who unexpectedly became family even though you don’t share the same last name.
Take a moment today to send a text, make a phone call, or write a note.
Tell them what they mean to you.
Because sometimes the greatest gift we can give is letting someone know they made a difference in our story.
I will leave you with this Prayer –
Lord, thank You for reminding me that family isn’t always defined by blood, but by love rooted in You. Thank You for every sister in Christ who has walked beside me, prayed for me, encouraged me, and celebrated with me. May I be that kind of friend to others. Help me never take these precious relationships for granted. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thanks for stopping by. Blessings to you! –Bev
