Sometimes God uses the most unexpected moments to remind us of His love. For me, it happened during a weekend getaway to Orkney Springs, Virginia, where a country concert turned into a living illustration of Sunday’s sermon about showing the love of Jesus.
A Weekend in Orkney Springs, Virginia
We had planned a relaxing weekend filled with two concerts at one of our favorite venues, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. Unfortunately, The Bacon Brothers canceled, so we only had one concert on Sunday night—tickets to see Shenandoah, a classic country band.
My husband wasn’t feeling his best, so in the end, one concert was perfect. Sunday morning was just like home: up early, coffee in hand, and tuning into our church service online at SonRise in Berlin.
That morning’s message was simple but powerful, part of their “Love” series: love people well—love like Jesus. At the time, I didn’t realize just how much that reminder would echo through the rest of the day.

When the Sermon Meets Real Life
I’ve always loved SonRise’s teaching series and the variety of pastors who share their perspectives. The messages are practical, engaging, and always challenge me to live more intentionally.
That Sunday, the words about showing the love of Jesus stayed with me all day, preparing my heart for what was to come that evening.
A Night of Country Music and Faith
We arrived early, enjoyed the scenery, and grabbed a light dinner. The evening was perfect—almost fall-like, even though it was still summer.

After the opening act, Shenandoah took the stage. I knew it would be interactive because earlier a group of girls had spotted Marty Raybon outside, and he happily stopped for pictures. He was personable, warm, and clearly enjoyed connecting with people.
While I didn’t recognize every song, many of them carried faith-filled themes. What stood out most wasn’t just the music—it was how Marty wove his faith into the performance. Through his music and words, Marty demonstrated how showing the love of Jesus can be part of everyday life.
Between songs, he quoted Scripture, shared about his time as a pastor in Georgia, and reminded us of God’s goodness. It felt less like a concert and more like a blend of worship and testimony.

When My Husband Wanted a Guitar Pick
During the show, Marty tossed several guitar picks into the crowd, but none landed with my husband. I had hoped he’d catch one, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Earlier, I had purchased a koozie for our son (he collects them), and we found out Marty would be signing autographs after the show. My husband asked me to see if Marty might have an extra guitar pick.
So I waited in line, chatted with Marty, thanked him for the wonderful evening, and asked if he had any picks left. He checked both pockets and shook his head. “Nope, I’m sorry,” he said. Then he smiled and added, “But…I do have something better.”

The Gift That Was “Even Better”
Marty pressed something small and folded into my hand. I thanked him, got my autograph and photo, and walked back to my husband.
When I opened my hand, I was surprised to see a miniature Jesus figurine. Beneath his autograph, he had also written: “Prov. 3:5–6. Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” I don’t know if this is something he always does but am sure once he saw the cross around my neck, he knew I would be blessed to have one. ✝️
It wasn’t just a trinket—it was a symbol. A reminder that Christ meets us in small, ordinary ways. These little figures have even become a trend, with people giving them away or hiding them to spread joy and remind others of God’s love.
The Bigger Lesson—Showing the Love of Jesus
Looking back, I realized the whole day had been beautifully woven together:
- The morning sermon on loving people.
- The evening concert where faith and music met.
- The little figurine that carried a bigger message.
It was as if God was saying: This is what it’s all about—loving each other and trusting Me with your whole heart.
That tiny Jesus in my pocket reminded me that showing the love of Jesus happens everywhere—sometimes in the most unexpected places.
Conclusion
Our weekend in Orkney Springs was more than just a concert getaway—it became a living example of showing the love of Jesus.
That night reminded me that faith doesn’t only happen inside church walls. It can be found in the words of a song, in an encouraging conversation, or even in a small token passed from one hand to another.
Each of us has opportunities every day to be that reminder for someone else. It doesn’t take grand gestures—sometimes it’s as simple as a kind word, a smile, a prayer, or sharing your faith through small acts of love.
This week, I encourage you to look for your own “mini Jesus moments.” How might God be inviting you to show the love of Jesus—in your family, at work, or even with strangers you meet along the way?
