What It Really Means To Be A Church Member

Praying, closeup and holding hands with people in bible study for support, Christian and spiritual. Community, faith and religion with prayer group in church for connection, worship and meeting.

I love to read, and I love learning from what I read. Every now and then, I come across a book that doesn’t just give me information — it gives me transformation. I Am a Church Member by Thom S. Rainer was one of those books for me.

This book was actually included in our membership packet when we joined Sonrise Church in Berlin last month. One thing about me is that I truly appreciate everything that is given to me, and I make it a point to read through all the information. That’s just who I am. I enjoy learning, growing, and understanding the heart behind things.

At first glance, I Am a Church Member looked like a fairly quick and simple read — and it is. But don’t let the size fool you. This small book is packed with so many meaningful insights and important reminders about what it truly means to be part of a church body. One thing that stood out is it’s not like a membership to a country club where you pay your dues and get served. It’s actually quite the opposite.

As I read through its pages, it gave me a whole new perspective on what it means to be a church member. Not just attending church. Not just showing up on Sundays. But actually being the church. Serving in many ways….hands and feet.

For a long time, I think many of us — whether we realize it or not — can begin to view church through the lens of what it offers us. We ask questions like:

  • Do I like the music?
  • Am I being fed?
  • Are there programs for me or my family?
  • Does this church meet my needs?

But this book challenged that mindset in a powerful way.

One of the biggest lessons I took away was this: the church is not there to serve me; it’s there for me to serve.

That simple truth shifted something in my heart. Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly in Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve….”

That verse alone speaks volumes. If Jesus came to serve others, then as His followers, we should carry that same heart into our churches and communities.

The church is not a country club where membership comes with perks and preferences. It’s a body of believers called together to love, encourage, pray, give, and serve one another. Romans 12:4-5 says: “So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

I love that picture of the church — connected, united, and working together. Being a church member means being committed — not consumers, but contributors.

This book reminded me that real church membership involves:

  • Humility instead of entitlement
  • Unity instead of personal preference
  • Service instead of selfishness
  • Prayer instead of criticism
  • Sacrifice instead of convenience

Philippians 2:3-4 also reinforces this mindset:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves…”

That scripture really hit home for me while reading this book. It also made me reflect on how I can better support and encourage my church family and leadership. Am I helping build unity? Am I serving where needed? Am I praying faithfully for my church?

Another scripture that beautifully captures the importance of church fellowship is Hebrews 10:24-25:
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…”

Church membership is about so much more than attendance. It’s about connection, encouragement, accountability, and growing together in faith.

What I appreciated most about I Am a Church Member is that it’s simple, practical, and deeply convicting without being harsh. It points back to the biblical purpose of the church and reminds us that membership is not about having our preferences catered to — it’s about being part of God’s mission.

I’m grateful for books that make me pause, think, and grow. This was definitely one of them.
If you’re looking for a short but impactful read that can reshape how you view church involvement, I highly recommend I Am a Church Member. It may just change your perspective the way it changed mine.

Thanks for stopping by. Blessings to you! –Bev
